We're in The Leader: Turning Fear Into a Force for Good
Ombra & Sole featured in the St George & Sutherland Shire Leader - and the story behind the headline.
We made the paper
This week, something happened that still doesn't feel real. Our little family brand, Ombra & Sole, was featured in The Leader - our local Sutherland Shire paper - under a headline I can't stop thinking about: "Fear into a force for good."
Because that's exactly what this brand is. And if you're new here, I'd love to tell you the whole story.
The diagnosis that changed everything
I was a brand new mum, with a 2.5 year old and my youngest just one year old, when I was diagnosed with melanoma.
I'd noticed some pigmentation on my ear and assumed it was a pregnancy thing - until it started getting bigger and darker. It turned out to be melanoma in situ: the earliest, most curable stage, because it's still confined to the very top layer of the skin. But hearing the word "melanoma" as a new mum? It broke me. I was petrified.
Since then, I've faced five melanomas. Multiple surgeries. And I'm writing this while still in the middle of it - I've just had surgery on my fifth, which meant losing half my ear, with more scans ahead. Years of treatment have changed my relationship with the outdoors forever, and the truth is, this journey isn't behind me. It's ongoing. That's exactly why I keep showing up for this mission.
Turning fear into something positive
I had a choice: let fear dictate my life, or channel it into something good.
As a special education teacher, my instinct was to educate. And as a mum, I was already living the problem every single day - chasing flyaway hats, replacing snapped sunglasses, and trying to find protective gear my kids didn't fight to wear.
So my husband Guy and I set out to prove something simple: sun protection can actually be attractive. That families could feel safe and look great. That's how Ombra & Sole was born.
What our name really means
"Ombra & Sole" means shade and sun - the balance at the heart of enjoying the Australian outdoors safely.
But here's the serendipitous twist: the initials O & S also happen to be our two children, Oscar and Scarlett. We didn't plan it that way. We just can't imagine it any other way now.
More than hats and sunnies
What started as a mission to keep our own kids safe under the harsh Aussie sky has grown into something I never dreamed of - our products are now stocked in more than 20 stores across Australia, New Zealand and France.
But for me, this was never really about selling stylish hats and sunglasses. It's a vehicle for real change.
That's why $1 from every hat we sell goes to the Australian Skin Cancer Foundation, funding crucial melanoma research and raising awareness about early detection. Protection with purpose isn't just a tagline. It's the whole reason we exist.
A winter reminder: don't get complacent
With winter sett in, it's tempting to think the sun has clocked off. It hasn't.
Here in Australia, UV levels frequently stay high enough to cause permanent skin damage - even on cooler, cloudy, or overcast days. That's the part so many of us were never taught. Sun protection isn't a summer only habit; it's a year round one.
If my story does one thing, I hope it's this: please don't wait. Check your skin. Protect the little ones. And know that early detection genuinely saves lives.
Thank you for being part of this
To Eva and the team at The Leader - thank you for telling our story with such heart. And to every family who's chosen to protect their loved ones with us: you're the reason fear became a force for good.
